Sacramento, CA —  A new measure to restrict a city’s ability to impound cars driven by people caught at sobriety checkpoints without a valid driver’s license passed on Tuesday.  The measure must return to the assembly for final approval.  The measure was introduced in response to the city of Bell’s use of impounding cars to make money.  Some other cities do the same.  24,000 cars were impounded in 2009 at DUI checkpoints in California, but only 3,200 of those behind the wheel were charged with driving under the ...

Mount Dora, FL — Police took three children into protective custody after they were called to a Walmart parking lot and found a family of five living in their car.  The 1987 Cadillac Coupe de Ville was full of clothes and garbage such as old chicken bones, spoiled milk cartons and a bottle of tequila. Waste Spill From Louisiana Paper Mill Kills Fish

Louisiana — Thousands of dead fish clogged the Pearl River after a Bogalusa paper plant released ‘black liquor,’ a waste byproduct of paper making into the river on Aug. 9.  The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is holding the plant liable for the massive fish kill.  Some of the fish that were killed include the federally protected Gulf sturgeon as well as catfish and flounder.  The paper company could be liable for penalties and fines. Casey Anthony is back in Florida awaiting the decision on whether she must serve a year’s probation resulting from a check fraud case in 2010.  She is scheduled to start by Aug.26, but her lawyers are appealing that decision. TAMPA — Acting on a tip from an informant, police arrested a teen for planning a bomb attack at a local high school.  The student, Jared Cano,17,  who had been expelled from Freedom High School in 2009 was discovered with bomb-making material at his home.  Police learned from the informant that the attack was planned for the first day of school, August 23.
