The cab driver who struck and severely injured a Lynn man outside Salem State College last year pleaded guilty to charges from the accident Wednesday in Peabody District Court.

Anthony DiGirolamo, 33, of East Boston, pleaded guilty to drunken driving and negligent operation of a vehicle. Judge James O’Leary sentenced him to serve 90 days of a two-year jail sentence.

The horrific accident occurred a few minutes after Marblehead Police Officer Paul Belyea pulled DiGirolamo over for driving the wrong way down a one-way street and let him go.

DiGirolamo had two passengers in his taxi when he struck Michael Strakus, 18, of 52 Reed St., Lynn, and his friend Scott Poore, 18, of Stoneham, after Strakus’ car broke down on Lafayette Street in Salem.

Salem police said Strakus was hit so hard he bounced off the windshield of the taxi and landed face-first onto the flatbed of a tow truck that was there to assist with the broken down car.

A man in Connecticut has been charged with various traffic violations after he got into an ambulance and moved it because it was blocking his car. The man was illegally parked in a loading zone, and the ambulance was responding to an emergency.

The man was charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, interfering with police, taking a vehicle without the owner’s permission and operating a vehicle under s suspended licence.

The ambulance was not damaged in the incident.

A man who caused a three-vehicle crash Wednesday evening on North Second Street near the entrance of Sinnissippi Park was ticketed for driving under the influence, driving too fast for conditions and driving without insurance.

Rockford police arrested Sadar Tairov, 44, of Rockford, after he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries at Rockford Memorial Hospital, where he was taken for treatment after the crash. Tairov was booked into the Winnebago County Jail at 10:36 p.m. He posted $3,000 bail and was released.

Police said Tairov about 5:10 p.m. was driving a red 1993 Chevy S-10 pickup north on North Second Street when he crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes. The pickup then struck a southbound pickup and a van. Neither driver was injured, police said.

A former state police trooper from Bellefonte who was on probation for assaulting a woman in Clinton County is now accused of crashing his car into a utility pole while driving drunk, seriously injuring his wife.

Spring Township police say 40-year-old Richard Scott Keener was standing outside his vehicle on the 1200 block of Airport Road covered in blood around 9 p.m. Sept. 6 when police arrived at the scene.

Keener denied being the driver of the car, refused medical treatment, and told officers that his wife — who was laying across the front seat, unconscious, bloody and had a noticeably broken arm — was “just sleeping,” police said.

His wife, Brenda Keener, wasn’t sleeping. Police say her brain was bruised and bleeding, she had a broken arm, cuts on her face and shoulder, and her pelvis, vertebrae and two ribs were fractured.

Keener smelled like alcohol and told police he had two beers, police said. Two beer cans were found at the scene and Keener, who refused any field sobriety tests, was arrested and later found to have a blood alcohol level of .234 percent.

Two witnesses to the crash told police Keener was in the driver’s seat when they stopped to check on the car’s occupants.

Keener, who lives at 102 Marble Lane, was a trooper in the Lamar barracks when he was accused last year of raping a woman in her apartment. He pleaded guilty to lesser offenses of simple assault, indecent assault of unlawful restraint in exchange for no jail time, but nearly nine years of probation.

The Missoula Police Department, working with the Montana Highway Patrol, will conduct a DUI saturation patrol Friday through Sunday in an effort to combat impaired driving.

The patrol will begin Friday afternoon and conclude Sunday morning.

The emphasis will be to reduce or eliminate DUI-related injury crashes throughout the area.
The MHP will be assisting with extra patrols in the Missoula area and by providing their Mobile Impaired Driver Assessment Center to speed the detection, arrest and processing of impaired drivers.

A Grundy county driver stopped for speeding was charged at 11 p.m. Friday by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department with DUI.

Daniel Lewis, 22, 612 Second St., Coal City, posted $100 and his driver’s license and was given a Nov. 3 court date.

Lewis was stopped for going 46 in the 30 mph zone on Coal City Road. Following the traffic stop, Lewis appeared intoxicated and was charged with DUI.

A Manatee County jury found a man guilty of driving drunk on his lawnmower.

Deputies say they were called to a home on 34th Avenue east last July, where they say they saw John Folds acting intoxicated.

They say they then watched him ride into the dark two-lane road on the mower.  That’s when they gave him a field sobriety test.

Folds had a DUI conviction 15 years ago, which leg to three months in jail for this lawnmower ride.

A Moultrie, Georgia man was arrested after he was allegedly driving a motorized wheelchair scooter while intoxicated.

Police say it happened September 23rd when 59-year-old Robert Gibson was stopped by police at the local high school.

The high school’s School Resource Officer allegedly spotted an almost empty bottle of vodka on the floor of Gibson’s scooter.

According to police, Gibson had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and slobbered all over his shirt.

Police say he also admitted to drinking alcohol.

Gibson was taken to the local hospital where he allegedly had a blood alcohol level of .405.

He was later released from the hospital and taken to the local jail where he was charged with DUI.

Tracy Whidden of Polk County has been charged with one count of DUI Manslaughter from an accident that happened in May.

The 37 year old women of Mulberry, Florida was arrested Tuesday morning. Investigators say on May 9, 2008 Whidden was driving a 1999 Jeep sedan east on County Road 542, near the intersection of Delrose Drive West and drove off of the road and onto the south shoulder, spun out of control and struck a road sign.  Whidden’s vehicle continued to spin out of control and traveled back onto the roadway where it overturned and struck a 2005 Dodge sport utility vehicle, driven by 27-year-old Jonathan Wade Linder, that was traveling west on CR-542.  Linder’s vehicle came to rest on the north shoulder of the road, while Whidden’s vehicle came to rest in the eastbound lane on its roof.

The passengers in Whidden’s vehicle, 43-year-old Jacqueline Hickman of Winter Haven and 43-year-old passenger Teresa McVety of Lakeland were both ejected from the vehicle when it overturned.

All four received serious injuries and were taken to area hospitals.  On May 23 Teresa McVety died  from injuries she sustained in the crash.

Traffic homicide investigaters determined that Whidden’s blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was 0.106, above the legal limit of 0.080.
