Benton police arrested two Franklin County residents for DUI after separate automobile accidents over the weekend.

Jessica R. Kopacz, 30, of Logan was arrested Friday on a charge of driving under the influence following a single-vehicle accident.

Benton police officers were dispatched to the 600 block of South McLeansboro Street at 6:30 p.m. after witnesses reported that a vehicle was in the ditch.

Witnesses said the driver had walked away from the scene, and Kopacz was contacted a short distance away.

Benton Police Chief Mike O’Neill said Kopacz performed field sobriety tests and then was transported to the Franklin County Jail following her arrest.

On Saturday, Michael A. Williams, 45, of Benton was charged with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and illegal transportation of alcohol following a single-vehicle accident that occurred at 1:15 a.m.

O’Neill said an officer observed a vehicle on North Main Street that was partially sitting on the roadway and the sidewalk. He said Williams was walking around the vehicle, and the officer determined that the vehicle had been involved in an accident at the intersection of North Main and Mitchell streets.

Williams displayed minor injuries but refused medical treatment. He was transported to the Franklin County Jail and left with correctional staff following his arrest. His vehicle was towed from the scene.

A New England man who was busted for drunk driving a ninth time is headed to prison.

A judge sentenced 52-year-old William Conner to 2-and-a-half to 5 years behind bars. Police found him passed out, slumped over the steering wheel of his pickup truck, stuck in a snow bank last January. His car was still running and police say his blood alcohol level was 3 times the legal limit.

He also didn’t have a valid driver’s license.

Apparently the 3 strikes your out rule is no more. I guess they figured tripling it would be fair. WHAT A JOKE!!!

Marcus Vick pleaded guilty to drunken driving and other charges Monday.

Vick, 24, the brother of former football player Michael Vick, also was convicted of eluding a police officer and driving on the wrong side of the road, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney’s spokeswoman Amanda Howie. Vick was charged in June after fleeing from a bicycle officer.

A judge suspended a 12-month jail sentence on the drunken driving charge, Howie said, and imposed a fine of $250 and suspended Vick’s license for a year. Vick must also pay $280 in fines on the other charges.

Vick played football at Virginia Tech but was dropped from the team in 2006 after a series of problems on the field and elsewhere. He was released by the Miami Dolphins in 2007.

Wow, both these brothers had a great opportunity at a great life and both messed it up 10 fold. What a shame.

New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain issued an apology Sunday for his drunk driving arrest.

“I want to apologize to the New York Yankees and the fans for an error in judgment and for putting myself in a difficult situation,” said Chamberlain in a statement released by his agent, Randy Hendricks. “I intend to properly resolve this situation, and do not intend to be in such a situation again. My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season.”

Chamberlain was arrested early Saturday just outside his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska. According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Chamberlain was pulled over for speeding by the Nebraska State Patrol just after 1 a.m. The officer detected an odor of alcohol coming from the car and saw an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

Chamberlain, 23, just completed his second season in the majors with the Yankees, compiling a 4-3 record with a 2.60 earned run average in 42 games, including 12 starts. The righty has been used as both a set-up man and a starter, and team chairman Hank Steinbrenner said recently that the team would probably use him as a starter in 2009.

The cab driver who struck and severely injured a Lynn man outside Salem State College last year pleaded guilty to charges from the accident Wednesday in Peabody District Court.

Anthony DiGirolamo, 33, of East Boston, pleaded guilty to drunken driving and negligent operation of a vehicle. Judge James O’Leary sentenced him to serve 90 days of a two-year jail sentence.

The horrific accident occurred a few minutes after Marblehead Police Officer Paul Belyea pulled DiGirolamo over for driving the wrong way down a one-way street and let him go.

DiGirolamo had two passengers in his taxi when he struck Michael Strakus, 18, of 52 Reed St., Lynn, and his friend Scott Poore, 18, of Stoneham, after Strakus’ car broke down on Lafayette Street in Salem.

Salem police said Strakus was hit so hard he bounced off the windshield of the taxi and landed face-first onto the flatbed of a tow truck that was there to assist with the broken down car.

A man in Connecticut has been charged with various traffic violations after he got into an ambulance and moved it because it was blocking his car. The man was illegally parked in a loading zone, and the ambulance was responding to an emergency.

The man was charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, interfering with police, taking a vehicle without the owner’s permission and operating a vehicle under s suspended licence.

The ambulance was not damaged in the incident.

A man who caused a three-vehicle crash Wednesday evening on North Second Street near the entrance of Sinnissippi Park was ticketed for driving under the influence, driving too fast for conditions and driving without insurance.

Rockford police arrested Sadar Tairov, 44, of Rockford, after he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries at Rockford Memorial Hospital, where he was taken for treatment after the crash. Tairov was booked into the Winnebago County Jail at 10:36 p.m. He posted $3,000 bail and was released.

Police said Tairov about 5:10 p.m. was driving a red 1993 Chevy S-10 pickup north on North Second Street when he crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes. The pickup then struck a southbound pickup and a van. Neither driver was injured, police said.

A former state police trooper from Bellefonte who was on probation for assaulting a woman in Clinton County is now accused of crashing his car into a utility pole while driving drunk, seriously injuring his wife.

Spring Township police say 40-year-old Richard Scott Keener was standing outside his vehicle on the 1200 block of Airport Road covered in blood around 9 p.m. Sept. 6 when police arrived at the scene.

Keener denied being the driver of the car, refused medical treatment, and told officers that his wife — who was laying across the front seat, unconscious, bloody and had a noticeably broken arm — was “just sleeping,” police said.

His wife, Brenda Keener, wasn’t sleeping. Police say her brain was bruised and bleeding, she had a broken arm, cuts on her face and shoulder, and her pelvis, vertebrae and two ribs were fractured.

Keener smelled like alcohol and told police he had two beers, police said. Two beer cans were found at the scene and Keener, who refused any field sobriety tests, was arrested and later found to have a blood alcohol level of .234 percent.

Two witnesses to the crash told police Keener was in the driver’s seat when they stopped to check on the car’s occupants.

Keener, who lives at 102 Marble Lane, was a trooper in the Lamar barracks when he was accused last year of raping a woman in her apartment. He pleaded guilty to lesser offenses of simple assault, indecent assault of unlawful restraint in exchange for no jail time, but nearly nine years of probation.
